
Originally from Maliotenam, an Innu community on Quebec’s North Shore, Matiu is a singer-songwriter who stands out with his unique blend of folk and blues, performed in both French and Innu. After releasing a first EP in 2017 and the album Petikat in 2018, he returned in 2022 with Tipatshimushtunan—produced by Louis-Jean Cormier. Backed by outstanding musicians, he delivers a live performance that is both festive and moving, infused with humour and sensitivity. Through lyrics inspired by his daily life, his community, and the Indigenous quest for identity, Matiu connects with audiences with authenticity and energy.
Known for his memorable performances, Matiu has toured throughout Quebec, across Canada, Europe, Texas, and Africa. He has performed at numerous festivals including the Francos de Montréal, the Festival d’été de Québec (FEQ), the FME, and Le Festif! He’s also been featured in major online events and showcased at leading industry gatherings such as ROSEQ, Contact Ontarois, Coup de cœur francophone, and RIDEAU. His career, marked by acclaimed media and TV appearances, reflects the unique place he holds in today’s Francophone music scene.
