The Frontenac Cultural Center collaborated with storyteller Mafane, originally from Réunion Island, and several partners to offer various artistic activities centered around storytelling for both schools and the community. One of the highlights is Family Day on Monday, February 17, 2025. Starting at 10:30 AM, you can explore various oral traditions through Repertoire Tales. A snack will be provided around 11:15 AM. Later, at 1:00 PM, you’ll have the opportunity to participate in a multidisciplinary creative activity with the storyteller and the visual arts teacher from École Mille-Îles. Far, far ahead lies the horizon, and just beyond it, "elsewhere."
Whether they come from there or talk about it, my stories all carry the scent of distant lands, bringing them here to you.

In this activity, I will present an excerpt from my show "Elsewhere is a Vast Land," featuring traditional folktales from different parts of the world. Trickster tales, legends, and marvelous stories intertwine to create a unique imaginary journey.

Storytelling Conference - "Taking the Story Out of the Book"

Most of the stories we know today have reached us through books (or through animated films, which are often inspired by books). But storytelling is not just about reading or reciting a text—it’s about breathing life into the story with one’s voice, breath, and body, making it engaging and enjoyable to listen to.

How can we reconnect with the oral tradition that is so essential to this literary genre?

After a brief introduction to her career and profession, Mafane will invite the audience to reflect on different ways to bring traditional stories to life. The conference will include a Q&A session, followed by a break.

Participants will then take part in a group visual arts activity designed to encourage public speaking and create a collective artwork that will be displayed in the theater lobby before the performance.

In a vibrantly colored coastal village, Sara and her grandmother lead a peaceful life. One day, a strange mist appears. At first, no one pays much attention, but soon, the mist grows into a thick fog that erases everything—the colors, the houses, and even the people!

Before disappearing, the grandmother entrusts Sara with her most precious belongings: a silver needle and a ship in a bottle. These magical items will guide Sara and her companions to the Land of Nowhere—a place so wonderful that it doesn’t exist... until they invent it!

Although the performance is recommended for children aged 9 and up, this marvelous tale will enchant the entire family.
